Reproducing the acoustic signals used for this project required a neutral wide-band speaker with accurate reproduction of timbre, taking into account and compensating for the inherent colourations in the stereo system itself, generated in the process of phantom projection. It also required a very low distortion as well as a capability to reproduce wave shapes with a very high accuracy. Although this speaker may seem over qualified for hifi-use, the very same properties that enables them to reproduce artificial test signals in the four domains timbre, dynamic, time and space, are to a high degree beneficial when reproducing signals as complex as music. “My ambition has never been to make loudspeakers that “create sound” for people chasing spectacular experiences. My ambition has only been to recreate the music caught on the recordings. I’m driven by my own curiosity towards these originals. I have found however, that in the long run, no coloring can compete with creating an opening to the true happening of the past, even in the aspect of being spectacular. It simply does not get more spectacular than opening up an uncolored window to the world of the recording.”
Ingvar Öhman, Head of R&D

The QM60 tweeter is a marvel in driver design. Its intrinsic high efficiency together with a crossover design that takes into account not only the shaping of the frequency response, but also the optimization of the impedance feeding the driver, minimizes the power compression as well as the distortion. On top of that, the speaker can handle many times the input power in the high frequency range, than speakers with normal 1” tweeters can.

The QM60 was originally designed as a laboratory instrument for a project researching the properties of human hearing. The difficulties in reproducing music should never be underestimated. The nuances are not no be ignored no matter how small and delicate they are.

The low and mid frequencies are handled by a single mid/bass driver. A single driver handling frequencies from below 20 Hz and up to over 7 kHz puts very high demands on such a device. Having to combine flawless mid range clarity also when complex music signals are handled simultaneously with long stroke action in the low frequency range makes such a driver even more difficult to design. Consequently many unusual properties and design features have been incorporated into this unit. The crossover design offers similar benefits as the filter for the tweeter, together with an intrinsic efficiency designed to increase with frequency in order to keep the heating of the voice coil to a minimum helps achieving this class leading driver design.

By using titanium in the bobbin, the heat distribution is controlled and the eddy-losses in the low frequency range are eliminated. Other extraordinary features are the use of aluminum core copper wire for the voice coil, double vented dust cap cavity and a distortion controlled undercut pole piece to linearize the force factor. A short circuit ring is implemeted in the magnet system to linearize both dynamic force factor and the position dependent inductance. The membrane is acting as a true bend wave transducer in the mid band, and the dust cap (made out of SPN) forms a midrange dome above that. The rubber surround is non-aging.

“Dispersion was a strongpoint with the QM10 and so it remains here, the QM60 projecting a full size image that reaches up and over the speakers themselves. It’s not out of scale however, you can get large but rather soft imaging from some speakers but this is not like that, in fact it’s on a similar scale to the larger B&W 802D speakers I use as a reference. They create a more precisely etched image but in terms of size and placement of musicians the two are very close.”

“This system proved remarkably adept at revealing the musical qualities of everything I played”

“Engrossing in another way was Gillian Welch’s Time (The Revelator), which is a good if not stunning recording, however in the Gurus hands it transcends the boundaries of time and space and places the singer right in the room.”

Jason Kennedy, HiFi+, May 2010

“These speakers are exceptionally communicative, expressive and entertaining, to the point where the whole experience quickly becomes seriously addictive”

“Physically very discreet and musically very communicative, this unusual standmount delivers surprising bass and marvellous time coherence”

“Has speed and time coherence like a single full range driver system, yet also sounds much bigger than it looks”

Paul Messenger, Hi Fi Choice, November 2008

“This is the first small speaker I’ve heard anywhere near its price that doesn’t leave me wishing for a larger substitute. Or a sub, or anything else for that matter. Finally, my monitor quest is complete.”

Robert Learner, Sonic Flare, March 2008

“The QM10 has been Guru-fied into a card-carrying high-end speaker, and it is a remarkable achievement. If this initial offering from this new company is any measure, Guru Pro Audio might become as familiar a Swedish name as Volvo, Ikea, or (dare I say it?) ABBA. Anyone considering spending about $2700 on a pair of speakers of any size must hear the Guru QM10.”

Colin Smith, Soundstage AV, August 2008

“The Gurus sounded amazing”

Art Dudley, Stereophile, August 2007

“An affordable classic in the making?”

Playback Magazine, December 2007

“The highs are transparent and seem to extend nearly to the moon, with never a trace of harshness or distortion, possessing a clarity that causes a sense of jarring reality. Often while listening I felt a sonic jolt of unnerving suddenness that occurred because the mids and upper frequencies of this speaker are so clean and so fast that everything you listen to seems to come alive and certain kinds of transients—say, a cymbal crash or particular electric-guitar riff—excite the system to the point of frightening reality. Speaking of cymbals, and at the risk of sounding redundant, the clarity of cymbal strokes is nearly unparalleled in my listening experience. The tweeter Öhman has designed seems to work miracles.”

Mike Quinn, Jazz Times, August 2008

“I found the sound distinctly clear and articulate, with really competent, clean and quite deep bass, available at good power and remaining tuneful and articulate”

“…admirable clarity, resolution and fine detail. Focus is good, image width very good. The general quality is upbeat with good dynamics and rhythm, driven by the high clarity and definition”

“It’s highly articulate, revealing and detailed, with good dynamic range and class leading bass tune playing, power and extension…It is unusually sensitive for the bandwidth and size, and is relatively easy to drive. The Supernait sailed away with this speaker”

Martin Colloms, Hi-Fi Critic, September 2008

“Easily the best sound at the show was in the Tom Tom Audio room, where a mid-range Naim system was driving an unusually squat, black loudspeaker that looked rather like a professional desktop monitor. It turned out to be the Quality Manager 10 from Swedish company Guru and was indeed originally designed as a pro-monitor. Wonderfully musical and capable of an entirely captivating performance, it also produced bass like no other compact speaker (using a four-inch driver) we’ve ever heard.”

Malcolm Steward, Hi-Fi Choice, June 2008.
